Starting and building your own online business is now not only possible, but also an exciting, stimulating, motivating experience. Using a combination of existing knowledge, experience, and skills combined with the latest new software, training, and support, you can now be your own boss and say goodbye to the 9 – 5 drudgery of commuting, clocking in and out, and working to someone else’s agenda.
You may have wondered why anyone would want to give up the safety and security of a regular salary from their employer in exchange for the challenges and uncertainties of running their own business. It is certainly not a decision anyone should make lightly, and it would be irresponsible to play down the responsibility any new business owner has to themselves, their families, and employees they might engage at the start or in the future.
During the global pandemic in 2020, many people have experienced losing their job through no fault of their own. Their safety, security and salary disappeared with little notice through redundancy as traditional businesses cut back on the size of their workforce or stopped trading completely.
In those cases, starting a home-based business may be the only option, so it is important to plan carefully, thinking about your budget, tools you might need, and support from family, friends, and business professionals.
Think about the skills, knowledge, and experience you already possess to get you started. Think about your personal capacity to learn, develop, and take on new responsibilities.
On this page, I will run through some of the tools and resources you can easily access at free or low cost if necessary, or for a modest investment if you would like a more comprehensive and inclusive package. If you choose the free or low cost options, it is certainly possible to increase your investments later on as the business begins to generate income, but some people prefer to accelerate their growth and development, and if they can afford to invest more, that may be their preferred option.
Having got your basic start-up kit ready, you are going to need to think about all those other tools and resources you need to run a business. It can seem a bit overwhelming at first, so I would suggest that the next step is to get some solid business advice. You must make sure that you are operating legally, and the rules for this will vary depending on the country in which you are based.

Your Work Space
Starting out, think about your workspace. You may have a suitable workstation at home, or you may have thought about using shared workspace. I have previously paid for a shared workspace which can well if you want to have access to some of the additional facilities some spaces offer such small meeting rooms for individual clients, or larger rooms for training. I have also used a local business hub positioned in a local library operated by the local authority which is completely free to use for local residents.
Either of the options can work well, although when many public offices and workspaces were shut for several months during a recent pandemic, home working became the only option.
Your Equipment
Hardware that you will need includes a suitable computer. These days there are plenty of options; tablets, laptops, larger home computers, with a choice of operating systems and software. You may already have suitable equipment, but I would strongly recommend that you have something that is not shared with other people, and if possible is used solely for your business.
I use a small screen laptop that is powerful enough to run all my software and yet small enough to travel with. Remember that one of the advantages of running your own business online is that it is possible to access it while you are away allowing you to travel more while still being able to set aside a couple of hours a day to maintain business operations.
Most PC's & laptops come with a built-in camera which has now become essential for online meetings with clients, or simply networking. If you are buying new equipment, make sure that a webcam is included. If you are using existing equipment without a camera, make sure it has a spare USB port so you can buy a webcam can easily be connected. You may also wish to upgrade to a more expensive webcam if you want to make videos for use on your website or social media, but again you can probably manage with the basic model when starting out.
You will need access to the internet. If you are using home Wi-Fi, make sure you have enough capacity in your allowance, and that the speed is adequate for your requirements. If you do not currently have home Wi-Fi it is worth checking the cost of packages in your area. Wi-Fi can be received through your existing phone line, through cable, or via a portable / mobile router from most mobile phone providers. Shop around and get advice for the best deals in your local area.
You will also need the best software to run your business. You may already have a collection of software that you use for word processing, publishing, presentations, designing etc. You may also have an existing business and use cloud based software for which you pay monthly fees for your, website builder, sales funnels, and affiliate programme. Working on your own when you have been used to being part of a busy and multiskilled team, especially when you are starting a new business, can be a lonely and daunting experience. One quick and easy way to overcome the isolation of working on your own is to join a networking organisation that meets regularly where you can get both advice and support in running your own business, and also build up your potential client list and market your business to others. In recent years, networking has become extremely popular as more and more individuals choose to become self employed and start up their own business. Don't be surprised to also meet members representing larger businesses and organisations as they too realise the advantage of online networking today..
The best networking organisation for you is going to be a personal choice, and there are many great organisations out there. My experience has been that is about finding a suitable fit to your own personality, while at the same time ensuring that you are joining an organisation that provides many opportunities to network. For example, you may prefer a group that meets with the same members at the same time each week where you are the only attendee from your chosen business sector, or you may prefer a more flexible national and international networking organisation where you can choose to attend meetings all over the UK and abroad online or in person. Make sure that you are selling products and services that are legal, ethical, and that you are passionate about and believe in. You may wish to simply transfer an existing business to an online operation, or you may already have a strong idea that you have been working on. You may even find that you have more choice than you need, so don’t be shy about turning down some of the opportunities you discover. You should certainly not feel under any pressure to make a quick decision, and you should also take time to look into every opportunity carefully and conduct the appropriate due diligence before agreeing to anything, signing contracts, or parting with money.

Now we come on to your physical presence online. This may take the form of a single landing page or a fully functional multipage website like this one. You can find lots of options, and you should consider both your immediate requirements and your longer- term requirements. You may think you need the most basic website and online tools at the moment, but consider your needs as the business grows, and you are selling more products and services with an ever increasing customer base.
